The output from a strip mill is coiled and, subsequently, used as the feed for a cold rolling mill or used directly by fabricators. Billets, for re-rolling, are subsequently rolled in either a merchant, bar or rod mill. The\u00a0<i>two-high reversing<\/i>\u00a0mill has rolls that can rotate in both directions, but the disadvantage is that the rolls must be stopped, reversed, and then brought back up to rolling speed between each pass. To resolve this, the\u00a0<i>three-high<\/i> mill was invented, which uses three rolls that rotate in one direction; the metal is fed through two of the rolls and then returned through the other pair. The disadvantage to this system is the workpiece must be lifted and lowered using an elevator. All of these mills are usually used for primary rolling and the roll diameters range from 60 to 140 cm (24 to 55 in).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To minimize the roll diameter a\u00a0<i>four-high<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i><a title=\"Z-mill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z-mill\">cluster<\/a><\/i>\u00a0mill is used. A small roll diameter is advantageous because less roll is in contact with the material, which results in a lower force and power requirement. The problem with a small roll is a reduction of stiffness, which is overcome using\u00a0<i>backup rolls<\/i>. These backup rolls are larger and contact the back side of the smaller rolls. A four-high mill has four rolls, two small and two large. A cluster mill has more than 4 rolls, usually in three tiers. These types of mills are commonly used to <a href=\"http:\/\/azarghaltak.com\/en\/2019\/08\/17\/hot-rolling-vs-cold-rolling\/\">hot roll<\/a> wide plates, most <a href=\"http:\/\/azarghaltak.com\/en\/2019\/08\/17\/hot-rolling-vs-cold-rolling\/\">cold rolling<\/a> applications, and to roll foils.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Historically mills were classified by the product produced:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Blooming mill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blooming_mill\">Blooming<\/a>, cogging and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Slabbing mill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slabbing_mill\">slabbing mills<\/a>, being the preparatory mills to rolling finished\u00a0<a title=\"Rail profile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rail_profile\">rails<\/a>, shapes or plates, respectively. If reversing, they are from 34 to 48\u00a0inches in diameter, and if three-high, from 28 to 42\u00a0inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Billet mill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billet_mill\">Billet mills<\/a>, three-high, rolls from 24 to 32\u00a0inches in diameter, used for the further reduction of blooms down to 1.5&#215;1.5-inch billets, being the nubpreparatory mills for the\u00a0<a title=\"Bar stock\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bar_stock\">bar and rod<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Beam mills, three-high, rolls from 28 to 36\u00a0inches in diameter, for the production of heavy\u00a0<a title=\"I-beam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I-beam\">beams<\/a>\u00a0and channels 12\u00a0inches and over.<\/li>\n<li>Rail mills with rolls from 26 to 40\u00a0inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Shape mills with rolls from 20 to 26\u00a0inches in diameter, for smaller sizes of beams and channels and other structural shapes.<\/li>\n<li>Merchant bar mills with rolls from 16 to 20\u00a0inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Small merchant bar mills with finishing rolls from 8 to 16\u00a0inches in diameter, generally arranged with a larger size roughing stand.<\/li>\n<li>Rod and\u00a0<a title=\"Wire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wire\">wire<\/a>\u00a0mills with finishing rolls from 8 to 12\u00a0inches in diameter, always arranged with larger size roughing stands.<\/li>\n<li>Hoop and cotton tie mills, similar to small merchant bar mills.<\/li>\n<li>Armour plate mills with rolls from 44 to 50\u00a0inches in diameter and 140 to 180-inch body.<\/li>\n<li>Plate mills with rolls from 28 to 44\u00a0inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Sheet metal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheet_metal\">Sheet<\/a>\u00a0mills with rolls from 20 to 32\u00a0inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Universal mills for the production of square-edged or so-called universal plates and various wide flanged shapes by a system of vertical and horizontal rolls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"Tandem_mill\" class=\"mw-headline\">Tandem mill<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A tandem mill is a special type of <a href=\"http:\/\/azarghaltak.com\/en\/2019\/08\/17\/rolling\/\">modern rolling<\/a> mill where rolling is done in one pass. In a traditional rolling mill rolling is done in several passes, but in tandem mill there are several\u00a0<i>stands<\/i>\u00a0(&gt;=2 stands) and reductions take place successively. The number of stands ranges from 2 to 18.
